Weight Check

Just letting everyone know - Jacob's weight check went fine. He's now 10 lbs 6 ounces so he is finally back up to birth weight and then some! We did have to put him on Prevacid due to his acid reflux. Hopefully it'll only be for 1-2 months and then it'll stop. Other than that he's still as healthy as can be!

Do they look alike?

Many people have asked us if Josh and Jacob look alike at this newborn age. Brent and I think they do and that the resemblance is obvious, except that Josh was blonde, fair skinned and Jacob has darker hair and darker skin and is just a little bit chunkier. I went back into some pictures and actually found my pics of Josh as a newborn and at 3 weeks, which is the same age that Jacob is today. So, below are those photos for you to compare and decide for yourself whether or not they look alike.

The 2 week check-up

Well, yesterday Jacob turned 2 weeks. Time is really flying by. Before you know it I'm gonna have to go back to work. Not that I don't like my job, but I would love to have more than 6 weeks with my new baby.

Today Jacob had his 2 week check up. He actually turned 2 weeks yesterday (Wednesday). I guess I should have been more prepared. I did not realize that he was going to have his HEP B shot. Poor little guy. He cried so hard and held his breath for so long that he turned every shade of red and purple imaginable. Thank goodness Brent didn't have to go - he doesn't handle that kinda thing very well. They also poked his foot so they could redo the PKU testing. So little guy got stuck twice today. Dr. Mac said that everything looks good. The only thing he is really concerned about is his lack of weight gain since birth. When we left the hospital he had gone from 10 pounds to 9.7 pounds. He hasn't gained any at all. According to the dr, Jacob should be passed his birth weight by now. So, we have to feed him every 2 hours now and he has to take at least 3 ounces at every feeding. We have to take him back next week for a weight check. If he has gained weight, we don't have to see the dr. If he hasn't gained weight or has gained very little, then we have to see the dr. and try to find out why he isn't gaining weight. It's not like Jacob doesn't eat....kid never stops eating it seems. He has been eating every 3-4 hours and taking at least 3 ounces each time. So far we have noticed that between the hours of 9:00 p.m. to 12:00 a.m., he is fussy. Not really crying, just more like whining and restless. After that he goes to sleep and sleeps pretty good. Usually 3-4 hours at a time. He wakes up, we change him, feed him, and he usually goes right back to sleep. Other than that our boy looks good and healthy.

Josh is still doing very good with him. He kisses him goodbye every morning before he goes to school. He is still wanting Daddy to come and eat lunch with him quite a bit and still acts out occasionally to get our attention, but for the most part he seems to be adjusting well. We did have to take him to the dr. this week as well. Seems Josh is having problems with acid reflux. Dr. Mac said that it could be some of the foods that he eats (mainly pastas, spaghetti, pizza) or it could be from stress. Stress can apparently cause acid reflux and he said possibly the baby could be stressful for him right now. Anyway, he has to be on Prevacid for a month and see how he does. I think it really has to do with his food. We went through this during the summer too. Of course then we were both on a huge Sonic kick since that's the only thing that didn't make me sick with this past pregnancy.

Below are pics of Jacob as a 2 week old. On a side note, Josh wanted us to post pics of him riding his electric scooter he got for Christmas.

Anyway, that's about it for the Kovar household this week so far, but there's still 3 more days left in this week so who knows what could happen!

A+ student!

Just wanted to share the news that Josh made the all "A" honor roll again for the 2nd time so far this year. Mom and Dad are very proud! Right now in school they are working on sentence structure, ones and tens place, fact families, reading comprehension, and math facts. He's doing very well and breezes through homework. His reading DRA is currently a 13, which is very good. They want them on a 17-18 by the end of first grade so he's almost there!

Way to go Josh!

Josh the Genius

Josh can say the funniest things. I was going through Josh's folder today from school and I noticed that he had a lot of good grades. So I say

"Josh, you have some really good grades. I am so proud of you!"

Josh: "I know. I'm just a genius that way."

No self esteem issues here!

1 Week Already?

Has it already been a week since Jacob was born? Hard to believe but it's true. He's already a week old. It seems like we just came home from the hospital. This one week definitely just flew by. I always hope that time will stand still or slow down just a bit, but when I look at Josh I am reminded of just how fast time goes by and gets away from you.

Life in the Kovar household this week has been a definite adjustment. We had forgotten how much work a newborn is, not mention throwing in a 7 year old's schedule as well. Josh seems to have handled the change okay for now. We've had to do some damage control. For instance, Josh's nickname is buddy. His Peepaw and Daddy both call him buddy or fishing buddy. Well, Brent made the mistake of calling Jacob buddy and Josh was very quick and firm to remind him that Buddy is HIS name. So we asked Josh what we could call Jacob. He said Chuncky Buddy was okay. So Jacob is now Chuncky Buddy - but I don't know if we'll keep that. We don't want to give Jacob a complex or anything. For those who don't know, the Chuncky comes from the fact that he weighed 10 pounds when he was born!
Josh also figured something wasn't right when he came into our bedroom and saw Daddy, Jacob, and Mommy all laying in bed with Jacob in the middle. He promptly grabbed his pillow and blanket and asked, "Where am I going to lay down?" Of course we made room for him too, and of course Josh had to lay next to Daddy.
Usually Josh just wants one of us to bring lunch to him at school but doesn't necessarily want us to stay but on the Monday after Jacob was born Josh not only wanted Daddy to bring him lunch, but to stay and eat with him and then watch him play on the playground after lunch. How could Brent refuse a lunch invitation like that?
I'm sure some of this will wear off in the next few weeks. Josh does enjoy holding him though and so far has asked at least twice a day if he can hold him. Unless Jacob's asleep we let him and Josh always looks so proud, especially when Jacob looks up at him.
Brent and I are having to adjust to the lack of sleep. I think that's the main issue for us. I can do fine with only a few hours of sleep, not saying I'm not cranky or anything, but I prefer my 8-9 hours and coffee to be at my very best. Poor Brent - he doesn't do well without sleep at all. He seems confused most of the time without sleep and for those of you who already know Brent, more confusion on his part is not what we need! Just kidding babe :)

Anyway, to sum up how this week has gone: lack of sleep, gas issues (Jacob of course), nickname issues, house is a wreck, working on schedules, and lots of TLC for the two beautiful and wonderful boys that God has blessed us with.
